Three steps: set up your career profile (your experience, education, and skills), add a job posting you want to apply for, then hit Generate on that job. The resume and cover letter are written to match exactly what that posting asks for. The Getting Started checklist on your dashboard walks you through it.

No. The fastest way is to import an existing resume — upload the file and AI fills in your experience, education, and skills for you to fine-tune. You can also fill the sections in yourself. Both paths are offered when you open your profile.

Absolutely. Fill in the profile sections directly — you only need at least one work experience entry to start adding jobs and generating documents, and you can keep adding detail whenever you like. Many people start small and let their first generated resume show them what to flesh out.

Every resume and cover letter is written from your profile — it is the single source the AI draws on. Nothing is ever invented, so the fuller your profile, the more material there is to match against each posting and the sharper the tailoring gets. Five minutes adding detail pays off in every document afterwards.

The AI reads the job posting you saved, works out what the employer is asking for, and writes your resume and cover letter to lead with the experience and skills from your profile that answer it. The result compiles to a clean, ATS-friendly PDF built on a professional template.

Yes. Every generated document opens in a built-in editor where you can change any section, reorder items, and adjust wording. Saving recompiles the PDF with your edits — no design tools needed.

Yes. Each document page lets you switch the layout template and color theme after generation, so you can try different looks on the same content.

Documents are written in the background and are usually ready within a couple of minutes. If one fails, it is marked failed and never counts against your document allowance — just try again. If it keeps happening, email support@lightningapply.com with a short description and we will dig in.

Everything. The trial unlocks every feature, including the premium tools, with a set allowance of generated documents. The banner at the top of the app shows how long your trial has left, and your dashboard shows how many documents remain.

Each generated resume or cover letter counts once against your allowance — trial documents during the trial, a monthly allowance on a membership. Edits and recompiles of an existing document are free, and failed generations never count.

Your account, profile, and saved jobs stay right where they are. Generating documents and the premium tools pause until you pick a plan — memberships are on the Pricing page, and picking up where you left off takes a minute.

No. It works for any profession — healthcare, trades, education, sales, operations, tech, and everything in between. The tailoring is driven by your profile and the posting itself, not by a fixed list of job titles.

A lot of the value is in the tools around the documents: a personalized interview prep guide for any saved job, a salary negotiation assistant, automatic job discovery that surfaces postings matching a saved search, the Profile Optimizer that scores your profile and suggests concrete improvements, and general resumes you can build without a job posting. All of them are included in the trial — try them before it ends.

Every job you save can be tracked from saved to applied, interviewing, offer, and hired. Marking jobs as you progress keeps your whole search in one view instead of a spreadsheet.

Yes. Your profile, job postings, and generated documents are stored securely, never shared with third parties, and never used to train AI models. See our Privacy Policy for full details.

While you're an active member your files are kept for as long as your membership lasts. Outside of an active membership (during a free trial, or after a membership ends), files are automatically removed 6 months after their last update — editing a file resets the window. We recommend downloading documents you want to keep.

Yes, both, from your Account page. Export gives you a complete copy of your data; deleting your account permanently removes it.
